The story called Mother (Aaye) is the story of a widowed mother, struggling against the pressure of people trying to dictate her life for her. The protagonist of each story represents and explores a particular role which a woman plays within the context of Indian society, and the various levels of discrimination she has to face on account of her gender.

Often, there is a complex conundrum of both, because these are two issues which often overlap, and are hardly exclusive from one another. Urmila Pawar makes each of her protagonists very representative of the everyday people we are, thereby, letting the scope of empathy seep through her very realistic plots and settings.Įach of her stories explores a different facet of gender discrimination, or class discrimination. What is so refreshing by these stories is that they are very relatable. The women in her stories play multiple roles, and each short story very succinctly expresses gender identity, and gender struggle, without pointing out to the obvious. She writes in Marathi, but the book of short stories has been translated into English by Veena Rao.Įach of her short stories deals with women and their struggle against societal boundaries and limitations. Her most recent work, Mother Wit, is testimony to her gritty, vivid stories, which are an important part of Indian Dalit Literature, as well as Indian feminist literature. Her stories resound with her own self definition, which is, a woman, a dalit and a Buddhist. Urmila Pawar is an acclaimed Maharashtrian writer, and is also considered to be one of the most acclaimed writers representing Dalit culture and gender issues.
